asola Automotive is taken over by a2 solar - Advanced and Automotive Solar Systems GmbH

a2 solar is a new start-up company with Reinhard Wecker at the helm. Wecker was the founder and managing director of the ASOLA Group, guiding the company since 2001, during which the company grew to have a staff of 270 and a sales of EUR 72 million in 2010. During the same period, the solar roof of the FISKER KARMA sports car was developed and went into serial production as the largest, most powerful spherically curved solar module in the world. The ASOLA Group became insolvent at the outset of 2013 due to a domino effect triggered by Chinese dumping prices and the bankruptcy of the key customer, Fisker Automotive.

“We are extremely pleased”, says Wecker in response to the result of the creditors' meeting, “that we are able to further develop and produce the special technology used in the spherically curved solar module for the automotive industry here in Germany and in Thuringia. We have found a German partner that will help us by leveraging its capabilities and worldwide connections to market this technology not only in Europe but also in Asia and in the US. Moreover, the main office for technology will continue to stay in Erfurt. Our product portfolio also includes all module technologies relating to building integration and the corresponding system technology”.

On Sept. 2 2013 the creditors meeting of asola Automotive Solar Deutschland GmbH confirmed and thus formally concluded the “asset-deal” and taking over of asola Automotive by a2 solar – Advanced and Automotive Systems GmbH. The parallel insolvency proceedings of ASOLA Quantum Solarpower AG ended with the same result.
